embecta Japan wins award for mobile app that supports diabetes patients between doctor visits

A free educational and lifestyle tool designed to help people with diabetes.

For its innovation in the diabetes care sector, embecta of Japan has been awarded Digital Innovation of the Year - Japan by Healthcare Asia Medtech Awards. The awards programme recognises medtech companies that have risen above the hurdles brought by the COVID-19 pandemic to better serve customers.

Formerly known as BD Diabetes Care, embecta’s history dates back nearly 100 years when it pioneered the first insulin delivery device.

To further extend its support for people living with diabetes, embecta provides the BD Diabetes Care App, a free mobile app that offers diabetes self-management tools and education.

Smart and Simple

Touted as a smart and simple approach to diabetes management, the Diabetes Care (DC) App addresses issues that people with diabetes and caregivers encounter by adhering to a treatment regimen. embecta reports that the app can be used by people with diabetes and caregivers.

The existing challenge for people starting or contemplating insulin therapy is the lack of support needed to engage in the regimen and the struggle with self-management behaviours. Meanwhile, HCPs do not have enough time to address all of the patients’ knowledge gaps properly and may be overburdened with phone calls and patient questions.

In response to these concerns, the DC app helps educate diabetes patients with credible, validated content and empowers them with new skills. The DC app connects all areas of diabetes management including the engagement of patients through digital experiences, improving care plan adherence, access to patient data, and providing tools for clinical support.

Leveraging embecta’s nearly 100-year legacy in the injection space, the DC App offers lifestyle and diabetes data and content, customized to meet local branding, language, customs and needed integrations in Japan.

Using the app, users will be able to set goals and reminders, choose from healthy food and nutritional recommendations based on their lifestyle, and benefit from emotional support and skill development.

Easily downloadable from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store without the need for a prescription or license from a hospital or health system, the DC app provides diabetes patients with information in the form of videos, tutorials, and articles, including content tutorials that review fundamentals such as the right injection technique and other non-medical, but urgent questions.

On the other hand, healthcare professionals are assured that patients are supported between visits with improved workflow.

Anytime, anywhere support

To date, embecta claims that the app has been downloaded by approximately 10,000 users in Japan, giving users access to diabetes management materials and insulin treatment support anytime, anywhere.

“At embecta, we are building the digital diabetes platform with the goal of differentiating and enhancing our value proposition along with our innovative diabetes care products, building a relevant digital ecosystem, and expanding diabetes care’s digital footprint through hundreds of thousands of users worldwide,” said Bajpai Shailendra, embecta’s Medical & Public Affairs Director- Asia.
