Bangkok Hospital Phuket wins big at Healthcare Asia Awards 2024 for innovations in patient safety and management

Recognised for its Safe Surgery Registry and BDMS Phuket Model, Bangkok Hospital Phuket leads in clinical service and management innovation, setting new standards in Thailand's healthcare excellence.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket has been honoured with prestigious awards at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2024, underscoring its commitment to clinical excellence and management innovation in Thailand's healthcare sector. The hospital's innovative approaches in these areas highlight its dedication to patient safety and efficiency, fostering a culture of continuous development and strengthening of the learning organisation.

Clinical Service Initiative of the Year - Thailand
To prioritise patient safety and enhance surgical care, Bangkok Hospital Phuket has developed the Safe Surgery Registry. This innovative information system is designed to improve the collection, analysis, and transmission of safe surgery data, thereby streamlining daily management processes and boosting clinical outcomes. The initiative showcases a significant leap towards leveraging standards of safety.

Acknowledging the critical importance of patient safety in surgical procedures, the hospital established a Safe Surgery Policy, necessitating a cross-departmental collaboration. The manual process of data entry into Microsoft Excel was cumbersome and error-prone. The introduction of the Safe Surgery Registry, utilising Microsoft Forms and Business Intelligence platform, has transformed this process. Through the Extract Transform Load (ETL) process, data is standardised and accurately analysed, culminating in a dashboard for real-time reporting that benefits both the surgical, operating, and quality centre departments.

The system has led to a notable improvement in clinical outcomes, with high compliance rates with the Safe Surgery standards. It has also significantly reduced the data entry workload, increased efficiency, and enhanced user satisfaction with its ease of use. Despite facing limitations like restricted access to dashboard data, the hospital continues to refine and expand the system, solidifying its commitment to patient safety and efficient data management.

Management Innovation of the Year - Thailand
The "BDMS Phuket Model" represents Bangkok Hospital Phuket's visionary approach to embedding an innovation culture within its organisational fabric. Aiming for sustainability and rapid adaptability to global changes, the hospital has realigned its vision and strategies to foster innovation. This initiative involves the creation of an innovation committee and the engagement of Innovation Champions, propelling the hospital towards becoming a hub of high-quality innovation.

By establishing a structured framework and collaborating with external entities, the hospital promotes innovation across three hospitals. This initiative not only aims to generate innovative ideas but also to ensure their practical implementation. Through training in design thinking, facilitatorship, doing human centre design, and participation in innovation projects, the Innovation Champions are equipped to contribute significantly to the hospital's development.

The BDMS Phuket Model has yielded impressive results, including a 70% increase in innovation projects and numerous awards at both national and international levels. The hospital's achievements in fostering a safety culture and continuous improvement have been notably recognised through its scores in the percent positive response of safety culture survey.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket's recognition in the Healthcare Asia Awards 2024 for both Clinical Service Initiative and Management Innovation of the Year in Thailand is a testament to its leadership in healthcare innovation and patient safety.

Through the Safe Surgery Data Monitoring System and the BDMS Phuket Model, the hospital has set a benchmark for clinical and operational excellence, paving the way for a future where healthcare is both innovative and patient-centric. These initiatives not only enhance patient care but also position Bangkok Hospital Phuket as a forward-thinking leader in the healthcare industry, committed to continuous improvement and sustainable growth.
