Number of ATMs in APAC continue to fall in 2022

A declining installed base in China is pushing down the numbers.

The number of Automated Teller Machines (ATM) in Asia Pacific has been steadily falling for the last five years, driven by a rise in e-wallets particularly in China, according to a study by banking research and consultancy firm RBR.

As of 2021, there are 1.46 million ATM machines in the region, lower than the over 1.51 million ATMs just a year prior.

This was driven by a declining installed base in China, where cashless payments have developed very rapidly in recent years, according to RBR.

The number of ATMs has been steadily falling since 2016, when there were 1.64 million ATMs across APAC.
